We recently added some new services to our menu here at Karuna Massage. Now you have three different options to receive reflexology and massage on your hands and feet! Some people may be unfamiliar with this style of bodywork and its benefits, so I thought I would share just a little information that might encourage you to give it a try.
Reflexology is one of the oldest types of bodywork. Some sources say it could be up to 4,000 years old. The exact beginnings of the practice are lost to history, but there is evidence of it’s practice in China, and in Egypt where it is depicted in one of the tombs. Closer to home, North American native tribes also practiced this form of bodywork for centuries.
The basic premise is that different areas of the feet and hands correspond with different parts of the body. Similar to acupuncture, the theory is that through massaging an area of the foot or hand you can influence, or stimulate, energy within the corresponding body part. A quick Google search brings up many “maps” showing what areas of the hands and feet correspond to the different body parts.
In addition to simply feeling wonderful, many clients experience significant benefits from reflexology. A few of the most common areas of relief are from anxiety, headache pain, PMS symptoms, and sinusitis. Additionally, there is research showing that reflexology can help enhance nerve function, and improve glycemic control (important in regulation of blood sugar). For many cancer patients, reflexology has improved their quality of life in areas such as enhanced appetite, breathing, digestion, mood, and sleep.
If you are curious about this style of bodywork, I encourage you to book an appointment today and check it out for yourself! ♥
One of the things that Karuna Massage does that makes us special is that we give 10% of our earnings to a good cause. For our first campaign I chose Hope for the Warriors, an organization that is focused on providing support programs for those who are currently serving, or have served, in our military forces and their families. Here are just a few of the ways that Hope for the Warriors offers assistance:
- For those who are transitioning from military service to civilian jobs, they provide training to help prepare them, such as resume writing and interviewing skills.
- Scholarships are available for spouses and caregivers of military personnel, who are often called upon to assume more of the burden of caring for their families.
- Health and wellness services are available including services for the entire family, short-term financial assistance for those who were injured in combat, counseling and other clinical support services, and support specifically for caregivers.
- A variety of sports and recreation opportunities are available, including outdoor adventures for service members and the Run for the Warriors series.
One of the reasons that I selected this particular organization is because of their focus on health and wellness services for both service members and their families. Massage therapy falls into this type of category and, as you probably know, massage is great for assisting our bodies in dealing with stress and healing. Our military men and women, and their families, can definitely benefit from this type of self-care.
Another reason that I selected Hope for the Warriors is because of the excellent rating that they received on Charity Navigator. This site scores charities on their financial responsibility and accountability, and it shows what percentage of the program’s expenses are actually used toward the programs and services it delivers. Hope for the Warriors received the highest score in this last area of any of the military charities that I looked at, with over 80% of their money going toward the programs they support.
